Hike Kit List (Day Hike)

A safe and enjoyable hike depends on being prepared for changing weather, emergencies, and comfort over distance.

  • Rucksack (15–25L) – must fit comfortably; ensures all kit can be carried independently.

  • Walking boots or strong shoes – sturdy footwear greatly reduces risk of slips and ankle injuries

  • Waterproof jacket with hood – required to avoid hypothermia in changing weather conditions.

  • Warm layers / fleece – essential for staying warm during rest stops.

  • Hat and gloves – even in fair weather, wind chill can set in at exposed points.

  • Full water bottle (minimum 1 litre) – dehydration is a common hiking risk noted in hillwalking guidance.

  • Snacks / high‑energy food – cereal bars, fruit, nuts.

  • Packed lunch – depending on duration and start time.

  • Personal medication – labelled and handed to leaders if necessary.

  • Hi‑Vis vest – especially useful when hiking near roads or crossings

  • Small first‑aid kit

  • Sun hat and sunscreen

  • Small sit‑mat for breaks

  • Spare socks

  • Emergency whistle
